From its founding in 1900 by George 'Pop' Tibbitts, the idea of 'A Vacation on Purpose' has been incorporated into every aspect of this ministry. CAMP-of-the-WOODS is owned and operated by Gospel Volunteers Inc., whose mission is to present the Biblical truths of Jesus Christ, develop Christian leaders, strengthen the faith of individuals and families, and promote global evangelism. Every decision made at Camp reflects one of these four principles.

Over the years CAMP-of-the-WOODS has undergone many changes, from its humble beginnings in 1900 as 'Camp Iroquois' on the shores of Lake George, to today's 115-acre family resort located on beautiful Lake Pleasant. Complimented by a 1,400 foot natural beach, 1,300 seat auditorium, 2 indoor gyms, tennis courts, challenge course, climbing wall, zip line, and much more, CAMP-of-the-WOODS strives to make each guest's stay a time of spiritual growth, relaxation, and recreation.

During the Summer Season, from late June to Labor Day, CAMP-of-the-WOODS provides week-long vacation packages. Daily, guests have the opportunity to be challenged spiritually by outstanding chapel and seminar speakers, plus participate in a variety of recreational activities. Click on the 'Summer Season' link for more information about our incredible summer opportunities for you and your family.

During the remainder of the year, CAMP-of-the-WOODS is a full-service conference center. With a capacity of 300 guests, a variety of seasonal activities, meeting spaces and buffet-style dining, Christian groups have the opportunity for relaxation and spiritual growth. Camp Tapawingo is an island camp for girls, ages 9-17. With programming and teaching aimed specifically at the needs of young women, Camp Tapawingo promises to be a blessing to all campers. The mission of Camp Tapawingo is 'to clearly and lovingly glorify, communicate and uplift Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior through personal example, meaningful activity, biblical direction and Christ-centered relationships in a safe and friendly environment that promotes fun, learning, growth and development.' Without the dedication of staff and volunteers, CAMP-of-the-WOODS would be an ineffective ministry. Each summer over 250 college and high school students from across the globe come and spend the summer serving God on His terms at CAMP-of-the-WOODS and Camp Tapawingo. With ample opportunities for spiritual growth, friendships and enjoyment of God's creation, staffers have the chance to come to a greater understanding of who God is and how to serve Him. As stated in our mission statement, CAMP-of -the-WOODS is also committed to 'developing Christian leaders'. To accomplish this important goal, the L.I.F.T. (Leaders In Further Training) program was started. Headed by David Sonju, ThM, Dallas Theological Seminary, this intense discipleship program is set in an atmosphere conducive to the spiritual growth of the believer. Now over 100 years old, CAMP-of-the-WOODS continues to minister to individuals and families. 'Pop' Tibbitts founded and served as director until his untimely death in 1948. Gordon L. Purdy and Don Purdy then succeeded him in that role for many years. Norm Sonju served as Chairman of the Board and CEO of CAMP-of-the-WOODS from 1997 until he handed the CEO reigns over to Jim Hammond on August 1, 2005. Norm continues to serve as Chairman of the Board. The Lord has truly blessed this ministry with these godly leaders who desire to honor Him through CAMP-of-the-WOODS.
